May you always remember that you love to have fun, how your laugh can make a whole room giggle, and how “up for anything” you always are. Never ever change these things about YOU…no matter what.

Lighting Faces

(from an artist’s studio in Asheville, NC)
I am pondering the connection between drawing portraits and taking portraits. Light source is everything in both processes. That may seem simple or obvious, but to me, it is a connection that is driving the way I LOOK AT everything right now. I notice shadows I didn’t see before. A light source in a particular place, at a particular time of day, will inspire me to grab my camera and shoot…just to take advantage of that moment of light. As I wandered through a few artist’s studios in Asheville a few weeks ago, I fell in love with this portrait wall. These portraits were drawn of local homeless people. The artist is going to sell them to raise money for the local shelter. I was drawn to the point of view of each page. The way the light had to be hitting the subject. I thought they were just beautiful.

Camera + Flash = LOVE

I LOVED the canon speedlite course. In 10 hours I learned how to use nine different products (modifiers) for nine different situations. It was intense and fun at the same time. I am so excited to practice these new techniques and skills. The ideas are overflowing.
Below are a few favorites from the day. Our class was in a “rentable” artist studio in DC. Wow, what a backdrop. Thank you to the beautiful Catherine for being my model all day long.
